Last week there were many stories from the Labour Party Conference. But the greatest of all in my book was that told by the people of Great Yarmouth.
You see Great Yarmouth didn’t send a delegate. They sent a coach! Thanks to Movement for Change and our Just Jobs campaign we went en mass.
I rode the coach with this amazing group. I was the only person who had ever been to conference before. Only 3 people on the trip had been party members for more than a year, including my organiser.
You see our role isn’t to ‘empower’ the people. It is to show people the power that they have. Sorry politicians but is wasn’t yours to give away.
I watched with tears in my eyes as people who had been struggling to find work, powerless and frustrated, found their voice.
And they were heard.
They were heard by Rachael Reeves, Yvette Cooper, Andy Burnham and many others. And they started to make a real difference.
Afterwards I received these messages from people who had never voted before, let alone been part of the political process:
“just want to say you have inspired me to do things I thought weren’t possible and made me a better person. You showed me politics if for the many not the few”
“I have had a life changing experience today at the labour conference with movement for change in Manchester”
I wanted to say that you have all changed my life. You have fought against adversity, stuck together and made more of a difference than any single person could. You show people that the power is in their hands.
Never forget what we have achieved so far and keep reminding me that together, we can change the world.
