Great Yarmouth Labour Party launched its local election campaign this weekend with the pledge to build a better Great Yarmouth by prioritising the needs of local communities and getting the basics right.

Trevor Wainwright, Leader of Great Yarmouth Labour Group, says the party aims to address the key issues facing the residents of Great Yarmouth including access to housing, bringing a new lease of life to our town centre, and cracking down on fly tipping.

From the cost of living crisis to NHS waiting times, it is clear that urgent action is needed to address the failings of 13 years of Conservative government right across the country, and the Labour Party stands ready.

The Labour Party’s local election pledges include a range of policies designed to improve the lives of residents in Great Yarmouth. These include:

• A Home for All: Labour will pursue opportunities to build new social housing in Great Yarmouth and support private renters by extending the selective licencing scheme, as well as investing in well overdue council housing repairs and maintenance.

• Love for Our High Street: Labour will engage with landlords to develop an “Empty Shops Strategy”, with the aim of bringing a new lease of life to our town centre.

• Getting the Basics Right: Labour will crack down on fly tipping and waste, enforce parking regulations, and protect our trees and environment, making Great Yarmouth a fantastic place to live in and visit.

Trevor Wainwright, Leader of Great Yarmouth Labour Group, said:

We’ve spent a long time listening to the concerns of residents and as such we’ve put residents and their needs right at the heart of our election pledges. Great Yarmouth is ready for change – and Labour is, and always will be, on the side of residents across our Borough.”

Sarah Owen, MP for Luton North and Shadow Minister for Communities, Local Government and Faith, said: 

“Spending time on the doorstep in Great Yarmouth, it’s clear people want to see change and are ready for Labour’s plan to build a better Britain.

“From the ongoing cost of living crisis, to the lack of dentist appointments and broken roads, everyone has been let down by 13 years of the Conservatives.

“By voting Labour on Thursday 4 May, you can send a message, that you deserve better.”

Great Yarmouth Labour have been encouraged so far by the overwhelmingly positive reaction of residents on the doorstep.

Margaret Walford, local resident and retired care home manager, said: 

“I think Great Yarmouth needs a fresh start. I like what Labour has to offer locally; it feels like they’ve really taken on board the concerns of people and want to do something about it.  I’ll certainly be voting Labour in May.”

The party is encouraging all eligible residents to register to vote and make their voice heard. The deadline to register to vote in these elections is 11:59pm on Monday 17 April.
