Great Yarmouth Labour Working for Great Yarmouth
The NHS is the Labour Party’s proudest achievement. The 70th anniversary of its creation is a landmark event and I want to thank you for being part of celebrating it.
Before I became an MP, I was proud to be representative for NHS workers for the National Union of Public Employees. I got to know many staff: nurses, doctors, midwives, porters, cleaners, security and admin staff – the NHS team. I hope you will join me in making this campaign a testament to their dedication.
As we celebrate the birthday of the NHS, let us also refocus on the need to secure its future. Our health services are at the heart of every community, just as the Labour party must be. During this campaign, let us show people how only a Labour government will protect our NHS and build a Britain for the many, not the few.
Jeremy Corbyn MP, Leader of the Labour Party
70 years ago a radical socialist Labour government led by Clement Attlee with Nye Bevan as Health Minister created our National Health Service – universal in scope, free at the point of use covering all publicly provided and administered. The Tories voted against it at every step in Parliament but it has survived, and as Bevan promised, lifted the shadow from millions of homes.
Throughout its history it has fallen to Labour governments to strengthen and restore our National Health Service.
The last Labour government more than doubled investment in the NHS, and we had some of the lowest waiting times and highest satisfaction ratings on record. The next Labour government will fully fund and reinstate a universal, public NHS offering personalised care to all.
To mark the 70th anniversary of this great Labour creation we are asking every local Party to support our campaigning activities. There is an important Health Campaigns Together march in London on 30 June that I hope you will support and in your local communities please consider organising street stalls, public meetings or even birthday parties to celebrate our NHS on the following Saturday 7 July.
Let me know how your campaigning is going by tweeting me @JonAshworth and remember we only have an NHS because of a Labour government and it’s why we need a Labour government again to restore it for the future.
